Soup joumou, or Haitian pumpkin soup, is a traditional Haitian soup made with beef, winter squash, and vegetables. It is typically eaten on January 1 every year to commemorate Haiti’s independence from France in 1804. Preparation of the soup is usually a family or community activity. Soup joumou was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2021.
