Waste management is rarely discussed as a jobs issue. It should be, writes World Bank Group Vice President Valerie Levkov. The World Bank Group's new What a Waste 3.0 report finds that one-third of all municipal solid waste globally is mismanaged. In low-income countries, 97% of waste is dumped or goes uncollected. Mismanaged waste undermines job creation, especially in high-potential industries like tourism and agribusiness. It pollutes communities, contaminates oceans and farmland, and clogs drainage systems, eroding the conditions that allow jobs and businesses to thrive. Waste management is also an untapped source for more and better jobs. Millions of people already work in urban waste and resource management in low- and middle-income countries, 90% of whom work informally. Integrating informal workers into waste value chains and improving their working conditions can offer them more stability, safety, and dignity.
