We’re taking it back to basics with this classic bourbon whiskey sour. Cutting back a bit on the standard ratio of bourbon to lemon and simple allows lower-proofed bourbons to stay forefront in the flavor. You do want to remember that you’re drinking a whiskey sour, so you want to taste that lovely whiskey you’re using. I added the option of black walnut or angostura bitters to brighten the citrus and sweet a bit.

¾ oz fresh lemon juice
¾ oz simple syrup

Combine bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup and bitters in a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice and shake for ten to 20 seconds, or until the outside of the shaker has frosted over. Double strain the cocktail into a rocks glass filled with ice. For a standard garnish, use an orange twist or flag and some quality cocktail cherries.
