Steps
Combine the spices for the homemade taco seasoning, then set the seasoning aside.
Add the cooking oil and ground turkey to a large skillet. Begin to cook the turkey over medium heat, breaking it up into pieces as it cooks.
While the turkey is cooking, dice the onion. Add the onion to the skillet with the turkey and continue to stir and cook until the onions are soft. Add the prepared taco seasoning, then continue to stir and cook for 1-2 minutes more.
Drain the black beans then add them to the skillet with the diced tomatoes (with juices) and frozen corn (no need to thaw). Stir the ingredients in the skillet to combine, then heat through over medium.
While the mixture is heating, slice the green onions. Stir the green onions into the skillet just before serving.

Lia Foster on 2025-11-21 (5 stars): Delicious! A little more watery than I anticipated, will drain a bit before serving next time.
Meredith on 2025-09-08 (5 stars): My husband did NOT realize this was ground turkey. That's a win, haha! I didn't have the can of diced tomatoes and chilis, so I used a spoonful of canned green chilis and a random assortment of tomatoes (chopped leftover fresh tomato, regular diced). The seasoning was delicious. We put in tortillas and served up with individual toppings.
Christina Norris on 2025-08-19 (5 stars): I needed a quick dinner recipe and I had all the ingredients for this Taco Skillet. It was great! Everyone loved it. Both tasty and healthy, too.
Lynn from NC Outer Banks on 2025-08-05 (5 stars): Oh this was so flavorful! I did take a short cut and used some leftover taco seasoning. I also rinsed the black beans. I didn’t have Rotel, so used your suggested tomatoes and green chilis which I did have! We ate some with soft corn tortillas and some with tortilla chips. Added cheese and plain yogurt and it was delicious. I started to make half the recipe, but I’m so glad I made the full amount. Tomorrow night we will have it on rice bowls. Thank you Beth, for this recipe and the Budget Bytes site. Y’all have never disappointed me!
Brittney on 2025-02-23 (5 stars): I melted Mexican blend cheese on top and ate with tortilla chips. So good!
Suzanne on 2025-02-01 (5 stars): OH yum! This will be a normal rotation item. I almost had all the items to make my own seasoning (Im getting there) but used a low sodium taco packet I got for 50 cents. I also mistakingly put the green onions in with the regular onions vs at the end. Couldn't make my mind up how to serve so did one scoop over lettuce and one in a tortilla. Both were delish! And I had lots leftover to put in the freezer as its Frugal February here at the beach!
Natalie on 2024-10-25 (5 stars): So simple and delicious! I doubled the recipe, and I subbed in a bag of frozen sweet potato cubes that I steamed for one of the cans of black beans. Perfect!
Brenda M McAllister on 2023-12-04 (4 stars): Glad I found this recipe. No fuss, easy to make. It was just a little dry for my taste, so I added a second can tomatoes. That's why I just gave it 4 stars. Will make again.
Zip on 2023-10-20 (5 stars): I love the turkey recipes!
If you haven't tried the spicy turkey breakfast sausage you really should. I cook the full pound as crumbles and use it for breakfast tacos with eggs and cheese. I do have to add a bit of oil because it's so lean but it is a great replacement for pork sausage.
Brittany Barrier on 2023-08-04 (5 stars): I made this and my 18mo LOVES it. He’s not a picky eater by any means but he loves this a lot. I just used the store brand taco seasoning. I didn’t have frozen corn but I had the Mexican corn in the can and used it.
Soooooo good. Definitely gonna make again.
Mel B on 2023-03-16 (5 stars): Delicious! Have made this several times. I’m so thankful for these recipes. My child had three surgeries, and it has been a struggle to put meals on the table. This is a favorite. Flavors are amazing. Thank you Budget Bytes!
Boje on 2022-12-26 (4 stars): Super easy and fast recipe. I used lean ground beef instead of the turkey. I did not make my own taco seasoning, but used 2 tbsp of store bought taco seasoning. I rinsed the beans (the recipe just said drained). If you are using prepared taco seasoning, you might want to add a little cayenne if you like things spicy (I did not add). I thought it needed 1/4 tsp salt, but that could be because I did not make my own seasoning blend. This was served over rice.
Joliene on 2022-07-02 (5 stars): This is super easy, and delicious! In the cooler months, you could use the leftovers to make Turkey Chili just by adding a few more ingredients.
Lori on 2022-06-01 (5 stars): This recipe has become a go to for me. I like to mix it up using whatever I have. Ground beef instead of turkey, adding extra vegetables such as pepper and zucchini. My husband likes it over rice & I like it just by itself. Thanks so much for a great, economical meal!
Marissa on 2021-10-23 (5 stars): I love the simplicity and versatility of this recipe!!
I had pulled ground turkey from the freezer for a different recipe but just felt exhausted and didn't want to make something complicated. Searched your page for ground turkey and this popped up as a perfect option!!!
First night I served over leftover rice. Second night in tortillas for soft tacos. Third night mixed it with a box of Annie's Mac n Cheese for an easy taco-mac!
DBWRN on 2021-08-18 (5 stars): I used the Jenni-O taco flavored turkey so skipped the taco seasoning and it came together in less than 15 minutes! Some of us made soft tacos, I crushed tortilla chips in mine. Fantastic!
