Steps
Preheat oven to 450 F. (read the tips in the notes before proceeding)
Add flour to a large bowl.
Grate the frozen butter into the flour.
Using a pastry cutter, cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Pour in the cold buttermilk and stir gently with a rubber spatula until a dough forms.
Lightly flour a work surface, and turn the dough out onto the work surface.
Flour your hands and gently knead the dough, add more flour as needed, but not too much. Dough should be slightly sticky.
Fold the dough in thirds several times to create layers. Work quickly to prevent the dough from warming, which could result in a flat, dry biscuit.
Finally, pat or roll the dough into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
Using a 3-inch biscuit cutter, cut out 4 biscuits. ( Regather the dough and pat it back out to cut the remaining 2-3 biscuits.)
Place biscuits on a baking sheet, with the sides touching.
Bake for 12-14 minutes. (Optional- During the last minute or two: Brush the tops lightly with extra melted butter and then switch the oven to broil to brown the tops if needed. Keep an eye on it the entire time while broiling, since the browning happens quickly.)
As soon as biscuits come out of the oven, brush them with melted butter. Once the butter has absorbed, brush them once more.

Annie on 2025-04-18 (5 stars): I love to bake but have always been afraid to try biscuits. I recently visited South Carolina and my hostess made them and they were delicious. She used vegetable oil. I tried her recipe but thought they were bland. Then I found yours! These are easy to make and the butter made all the difference. Thank you!
Meredih H. on 2025-04-11 (5 stars): This will be my go-to recipe from now on. They are absolutely amazing. Way better than any can biscuit. They remind me of my granny's biscuits. This recipe is absolute perfection. I froze 3 of them uncooked when I made my batch. I'm going to bake them up now. I'm hoping they're just as good.

Amanda McGee on 2025-02-22 (5 stars): This recipe is amazing! This was the second time I made homemade biscuits ever! My husband loved them so much that he requested a second batch on the same day. This recipe has got to be the best recipe ever
I highly advise the butter be frozen for sure and make sure you prep before hand so you can get these biscuits right in the oven.
I made biscuits for the first time a few weeks ago and they did not turn out well. I found this recipe and throughly read it and watched the video. So easy to make.
The only change I made was I didn't brush the biscuits with melted butter as I didn't feel they needed it.
Thank you!
