Steps
Preheat the oven to 350F (175C) and butter a loaf pan.
Gather dry ingredients. Sift cocoa powder into the all-purpose flour, then add baking soda, cinnamon powder, nutmeg powder and salt to that same bowl. Mix to combine them evenly.
In a mixing bowl, mash bananas until there's no big lumps. Add the melted butter and stir well to combine. Then stir in the egg and sugar. Alternatively, you can quickly combine the bananas, eggs and melted butter in a blender for a few seconds.
Add the flour mixture and chopped walnuts to the wet ingredients. With a wooden spoon or spatula, gently mix to combine. Do not over-mix.
Pour the batter into the loaf pan. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Remove from the oven and let the bread cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes. After that, remove the bread from the pan and let it cool completely on a cooling rack.

Kali on 2026-06-28 (3 stars): It’s a good base recipe but it came out feeling a little lacking in the flavour department. The sweetness was good but I think I’ll add more cocoa powder next time, more cinnamon and nutmeg, and some chocolate chips!
Adela on 2026-03-12 (5 stars): Hi Sophie! I don't usually write reviews, but I will gladly make an exception for this! This recipe is BLISS for us! We live in the UK, where most cakes and sweets in the shops are sweet with no real complexity in flavour, and it is a common thing to lament about not finding tasty sweet treats around (or very few). After trying this recipe the first time, I almost immediately started planning when I can make it next. It simply is delicious and it has so much complexity! I've also added brown sugar and it complements everything so well! Just wanted to say thank you for sharing this! It will definitely become part of our regular menu now and I can't wait to try even more recipes!
Cherie on 2023-08-12 (4 stars): Love the recipe but it needed more sugar and vanilla to make it better. I added and it turned out wonderful!
Lola on 2023-04-01 (5 stars): I’m an absolute pathetic baker and none of my attempts amounts to anything remotely edible but this one was just amazing! Delicious and didn’t last very long as everyone helped themselves to it ! Only problem is that I will have to make it again.
Rozan on 2023-01-27 (1 stars): The finished product was very disappointing. Almost a waist of good walnuts and cocoa. I will not make this again.
Momcat on 2022-07-26 (5 stars): Delicious! I made this bread today and am working very hard to eat it all! I usually follow recipes exactly the first time but I did make a few changes this time. I was short a banana so I used 1/2 C applesauce which was perfect, I prefer pecans so that was my nut choice and finally I added 1/2 C chocolate chips just because. I baked it for 50 minutes and that was just right. Thank you for sharing. Hmm…might be time for another slice! 😋
Anna on 2022-05-25 (5 stars): Delicious, easy to follow. I used the 1/4cup oil substitute suggestion because I was out of butter. Also added double the amount of walnuts.
petal jam on 2021-05-05 (5 stars): delightful variation on banana breads. improves if kept wrapped, uncut, for 24 hours. also good very lightly toasted to warm the spices + a dab of butter. recommended with a pot of smokey black tea.
Blanca on 2020-05-18 (5 stars): I am munching on this yummy bread as I type this, this bread came out awesome! I think it was the pictures that entice me to try it LOL there’s a possibility I may add another quarter cup of sweetener to the recipe next time. This time it will suffice to add a little powdered sugar. That’s only if you want it a little sweeter, otherwise it’s honestly really great!
