Preheat oven to 350℉ and grease an 8-inch square baking dish.
Place 1 cup dates (chopped) in a medium bowl. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon baking soda over the top of them.
Pour 1 cup boiling water over the dates. Set aside while you prep the remainder of the batter.
In a separate large bowl, cream together the 2 Tablespoons salted butter and 1 cup granulated sugar.
Stir in the 1 large egg and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract.
Add the 1 cup all-purpose flour and stir until combined into a thick dough.
Pour the water and dates into bowl with the dough. Stir until it becomes a loose batter.
Pour into prepared pan and bake for about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center has just a few moist crumbs.
Serve warm with whipped cream if desired.

Only thing was that the dates fell to the bottom of the time however the date flavour was dispersed throughout the pudding
